Bauxite mining operations at Nawailevu in Bua have officially ceased.
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said the land previously used for mining had undergone successful rehabilitation efforts.
“It means the rehabilitation plan that they submitted for the mine which was approved have been completed,” Mr Vosarogo said.
He said local landowners were set to benefit substantially from this transition.
“This marks a pivotal moment for the area as the focus shifts towards sustainable practices and economic diversification.
“On the whole land, pines have been replanted.”
In an interview with this newspaper, Mr Vosarogo said the landowners were projected to earn approximately $4million from pine trees planted on the rehabilitated land.
“All the holes dug for mining purpose have been buried and the ground have been levelled to some extent.”
The Minister said the rehabilitation projects were not only a means of restoring the environment but also to act as a catalyst for diversified economic opportunities.
“Any money achieved from this will go directly to the landowners’ pockets.”
Canadian company Aurum Exploration Ltd conducted mining on the Nawailevu area for at least six years.
