Basketball Fiji has joined hands with a leading telecommunications company in Fiji ahead of the National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships next month.
Basketball Fiji CEO Laisiasa Puamau said they were excited to be joining forces, and receive sponsorship, from Vodafone Fiji in supporting a number of basketball tournaments they have planned for the year.
“We are blessed to be receiving a three-year agreement with Vodafone, valued at a little over a quarter million dollars,” Puamau said.
The sponsorship will help Basketball Fiji deliver five events, with the first being the National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships in Lautoka early next month.
“The championship will start on the first week of the holiday of term two. The championship will most probably be held in Lautoka because we are having issues in finding venues here in Suva.”
Through the sponsorship, Basketball Fiji will also work towards strengthening school zone competitions at both the primary and secondary school levels.
“This will help better prepare schools before coming to participate in the nationals. The third component is promoting a three by three, which is a new Olympic discipline, part of this sponsorship will go towards promoting this in schools and communities.”
Vodafone chief marketing officer Rajesh Prasad says the sponsorship will help promote development programs that will turn basketball into a widely recognised sport in the country besides rugby and football.
“By joining hands with Basketball Fiji, we aim to further elevate the sport, empower athletes, and foster an environment to support basketball growth at all levels. Our shared vision is to create an ecosystem that nurtures talent from a young age and helps aspiring basketball athletes reach their full potential,” he said.
Players from participating schools and game officials gathered yesterday at Vodafone’s headquarters in Suva to witness the signing of the agreement.
