Opposition leader Voreqe Bainimarama has resigned from Parliament yesterday.

On a video posted on the FijiFirst party’s Facebook page, he said he would remain party leader.

Mr Bainimarama was suspended from Parliament for three years effective February 17 for statements he made against the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

“Given the need to maintain our numbers in Parliament over the next three years, and the need for FijiFirst to be on the ground at all times, following discussion with our general secretary (former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum), our Parliament caucus and most of all our supporters, I have tendered my resignation with immediate effect,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“My work with the GS will be to guide our parliamentary caucus so they can continue to fight inside Parliament while we engage more actively outside Parliament with our FFP supporters and the growing number of unsatisfied Fijians who are now questioning their decision to vote for parties that seem to not be delivering on their promises.”

He said the suspension meted on him was “in my opinion, unwarranted and most certainly unjustified”.

“I did not swear, nor did I make any racist or divisive comments.

“In fact, the so called offensive words could have been objected to by points of order as provided for under the Standing Orders. However, the decision was made by Parliament through vote and I have complied with the decision.”

Mr Bainimarama said he was personally concerned about the increase in the casual reference to racism, bigotry and statements of discrimination on social media.

“As a leader, I truly believe that if not stopped, such behaviour could lead to a disenfranchised society.

“I again urge the relevant authorities to address the issue.”

Opposition member of Parliament Inia Seruiratu will be nominated Leader of Opposition in the next Parliament sitting.

Parliament has not responded to questions on whether Mr Bainimarama’s resignation has been accepted or if his seat in Parliament will remain vacant while his suspension is still valid.
