A Military officer charged with a case of alleged unlawful possession of illicit drugs as well as an additional charge of attempted bribery has been denied bail.
Rusiate Cama Tawakilai, 44, made his first appearance before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne facing a count each of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, attempted bribery and serious assault.
It is alleged that on August 19, Mr Tawakilai was stopped and searched by a team of officers on patrol in Delainavesi, whereby a zip lock plastic containing white crystals which later tested positive for methamphetamine was discovered.
Mr Tawakilai then allegedly offered $150 to the arresting officer to release him, before fleeing the scene whereby he was arrested by two officers.
Mr Tawakilau sought bail on the grounds that his four children depend on him. However, police prosecution opposed bail, citing the public interest and the seriousness of the case.
After hearing submissions from both parties, Magistrate Somaratne refused bail.
Mr Tawakilai will appear on August 25 before Magistrate Sufia Hamza for his formal bail application.
