THE Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has reviewed its import requirements on the importation of blanched, peeled, frozen vegetables and herbs for local consumption.
The review came after increased non-compliance cases were observed at the Fijian borders.
In a statement, BAF said the importion of the vegetables and herbs would only be permitted through approved suppliers based on mandatory import risk assessment (IRA).
It adds an application for the import permit must be made and obtained from BAF well before the consignment is imported into Fiji and that a manufacturer’s declaration be made stating the plant product were blanched, peeled, and chopped prior to being frozen, that it was commercially prepared and packed in clean and new packaging.
“Biosecurity Authority of Fiji is mandated under the Biosecurity Act 2008 to protect Fiji from the entry and establishment of exotic pests and diseases,” the statement read.
“Apart from safeguarding Fiji’s pristine biodiversity and facilitating trade, BAF ensures the local demands including specialised demands for tourism sector is also furnished.”
