According to The Fiji Times on August 5, 1993, congratulations were in order for Suva Muslim College.
Why? Because it was the first school to enter the Qantas/The Fiji Times Suva Fun Run.
“And what an entry. The school has returned 125 forms,” The Fiji Times reported.
“Now that will take some beating.
“Suva Muslim College and other Suva schools have always supported the race and the sponsors are grateful for that.
“The run is for charity and teachers who encourage participation by students should be commended.”
The Times said it agreed with teachers who supported child development to engage in worthy projects at a young age.
“The Fun Run offers a chance to mingle with people of all races in a friendly, competitive atmosphere,” the Times reported.
Suva Muslim College principal Mohammed Munif says there’s no doubt that students enjoy the race. There is full support from our teachers.
“That’s why we have so many entries. We’ve always participated and won a lot of prizes.” The newspaper quoted Munif as saying his students were aware of the purpose of the race.
“This is our little contribution towards a worthy cause. We are grateful to be given the chance,” he said.
The report added that school team coach Murad Khan had been taking the runners for an hour-long training session daily after school for the last week.
“The participation by the schools is essential for the race to succeed and we welcome school teams,” The Fiji Times reported.
