AT just 27 years of age, Sikh Video Craft owner Ravi Patel was transforming a personal interest in video production into a growing business venture.
The Fiji Times reported on Saturday, May 14, 1994, that Mr Patel invested $20,000 into the business and was beginning to see the returns from his commitment.
“I started this business because I was interested in video production,” he said.
“At first it was just a hobby but then I saw there was a market for it.”
His company, based in Nadi, specialised in producing Fijian videos, music videos and documentaries, with demand for locally made content increasing.
“We’ve been getting a lot of requests from schools and organisations to produce videos for them.
“People want to see themselves on TV and on video.”
Mr Patel employed two staff members at the time and had ambitions to expand the operation. He was also producing videos for overseas audiences, particularly Fijian communities in Australia, New Zealand and the US.
“The overseas market is big for us. We’ve sent videos to Fijian communities in Australia, New Zealand and the US. They want to see what’s happening back home.”
While the business was growing, Mr Patel said access to equipment remained one of the biggest challenges.
“Video equipment is very expensive. But if you’re serious about the business, you have to invest.”
Looking back on his progress, Mr Patel said determination and belief were essential ingredients for success.
“Hard work does pay off in the end. You just must believe in what you’re doing.”
