THE Oceania Pacific Hockey Cup returned to Suva yesterday, signaling a new chapter for hockey in the Pacific after an eight-year break.

This year’s event marks the resurgence of regional hockey after challenges like the pandemic and a lack of infrastructure.

The last time this tournament was held in 2016, Fiji’s men’s and women’s teams made history with their decisive victories.

Stakes are high for the host nation as they aim to defend the legacy against seven men’s and six women’s teams, including formidable challengers from Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Zealand Pasifika.

Craig Gribble, CEO of the Oceania Hockey Federation, expressed his excitement about bringing the competition back to Suva.

“Fiji has always been a hub for Pacific hockey. After challenges like COVID and the delay in replacing the turf, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase the talent in the region once more,” he said.

With Fiji’s men and women teams training relentlessly, local fans are optimistic about their chances of making it to the medal rounds on Thursday.

“This is their home patch, and they always rise to the occasion,” Gribble said.

In addition to its competitive edge, the event is crucial for teams to gain international ranking points and exposure, a vital factor for developing hockey in the region.

For Fiji, the event is an opportunity to reestablish itself as a powerhouse in Pacific hockey while fostering the growth of the sport in the region.

Meanwhile, the games will continue today.

Yesterday’s results:

NZ Pasifika 5-0 Tonga (W) , Samoa 1-7 Fiji (W), NZ Fiji 8-0 Tonga (M), Solomon Islands 5-3 Samoa (M), Fiji Warriors 5-1 Fiji (M)
