THE Land Transport Authority is once again urging drivers to slow down and take greater responsibility on the roads.
The latest words of caution from the LTA follows two fatal crashes last weekend that claimed two lives, at Korolevu in Sigatoka and Wairuku in Ra.
Authority CEO Irimaia Rokosawa said investigations into both cases suggested the drivers had allegedly lost control of their vehicles, causing them to veer off the road.
“Despite numerous warnings and advisories, far too many drivers are still ignoring the risks associated with reckless driving, and improper overtaking,” Mr Rokosawa said.
“This negligence is costing lives, and we cannot afford to be complacent.
“Speeding dramatically increases the risk of a crash, yet too many continue to take chances.”
Mr Rokosawa said this mindset must change and that every motorist must take responsibility for their actions.
He said adverse weather conditions also impacted driving conditions, especially during periods of rain and strong winds.
“Reduced visibility and slippery surfaces increase the risk of accidents, as drivers may misjudge distances and underestimate the severity of road conditions.
“It is essential for motorists to exercise heightened caution when driving in such conditions,” Mr Rokosawa said.
“This includes reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance and ensuring that vehicle lights and wipers are functioning properly.
“Being aware of the potential hazards posed by inclement weather can help prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
“Drivers are also strongly advised to remain alert and drive responsibly during rainfall.”
