Athletics in Fiji is in a revival mode to bring back the sport’s glory days.

Athletics Fiji development officer and former Fiji and South Pacific decathlon champion and Olympian Albert Miller said work had been ongoing to try and revive the sport across the border.

Our number one objective is to revive our association and the sport in districts across Fiji,” Miller said. “We are trying to bring back district associations such as Rewa, Lautoka, Tavua and few others.

Athletics thrived in the 1980s because the sport was played in almost all parts of Fiji. That was how we found stars such as Jone Delai, Anare Ragigia and many others.

This is about talent identification and we are reviving districts and so far we have opened Vanuabalavu in Lau, Nausori, and a club in Taveuni, which we hope the island could form an association.

We have conducted clinics in Natoaika in Naitasiri and we are working with teachers in most areas.

“We need key people and zone delegates and plan to work with those in the schools’ athletics systems to help us promote and revcive the sport at secondary and primary schools level.

“It is about our grassroots development and talent identification.”

Meanwhile, Athletics Fiji will have its weekly competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva on Saturday.

The fixture is in the Notebook column.
