Lautoka’s Marine Drive was a hive of activities yesterday as representatives and family members of the Fiji Women In Maritime Association (Fiji WIMA) Western branch held a major clean-up campaign along the waterfront to commemorate this year’s World Fisheries Day.

Fiji WIMA vice president and Western standing committee executive Michelle Ram said this was their first outdoor activity they had, one year after establishing their West branch.

“COVID had put us in a very challenging position when we started but we are glad we have started and for us here in the West, we want to bring maritime here and we are glad we are here,” Ms Ram said.

“We want to do something for the environment to observe World Fisheries Day to make sure we sustain the current stock, sustain our maritime environment and conserve what we have. We got our family members and we have little children here today (yesterday) because they are our future and we are teaching them conservation at a young age because it will help them go a long way.”

Similar activities were carried out by Fiji WIMA members in Suva yesterday.
