A fundraising appeal has been launched to help return the body of Wame “Roy” to Fiji following his tragic death in Rarotonga last month.

Wame passed away on March 31 after a motorcycle accident, leaving behind grieving family, friends, and a community that remembers him for his kindness and gentle nature.

Described as a “well-loved and familiar face,” Wame worked at On The Beach Bar and Restaurant and The Edgewater Resort and Spa in Rarotonga, where he built strong connections with locals and visitors alike.

“Anyone who had the privilege of meeting him will remember his kind nature and gentle presence,” the appeal states.

“He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, always going above and beyond for those around him.”

Wame was also known for his love of rugby, having spent time in New Zealand in 2025 where he played for the Hikurangi Premier Team in Northland as well as a side in Gisborne.

Family members say he later returned to Fiji to spend time with loved ones before going back to Rarotonga for work.

“He was truly a gentle giant, and children especially were drawn to his warm and caring spirit,” the appeal adds.

A devoted father, Wame’s children were central to his life, and his loss has left a deep void for those closest to him.

“Wame was one of the kindest people you could meet, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.”

Supporters are now being asked to assist in covering the cost of repatriation so he can be laid to rest in Fiji.

“Now, we are asking for support to help carry him home to Fiji on his final journey, so he can be laid to rest with his family, surrounded by those who love him,” the appeal says.

Organisers have also confirmed that any remaining funds after funeral and repatriation costs will be placed into a trust for his children to support them in the future.

“We are deeply grateful for any support during this difficult time.”
