DESPITE being elected president of the International Trade Union Confederation Asia Pacific (ITUC-AP) during a regional conference in India this week, national secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress Felix Anthony says he is not leaving Fiji.
“I owe it to the workers in Fiji and I am not leaving Fiji under any circumstances,” he said.
“I am first and foremost for the workers of Fiji and I am under no illusion of the task we have ahead of us in the fight to wrestle back rights that have been removed from us since 2006.
“While my new role may entail a bit more travelling, I intend to continue to lead the struggle in Fiji to the best of my ability.”
Mr Anthony was elected president of the ITUC-AP via a secret ballot earlier this week.
Headquartered in Singapore, the ITUC-AP is the largest of the four regional organisations of the International Trade Union Confederation based in Brussels.
The ITUC-AP covers a vast area including the middle-east countries, the entire Asian countries and the Pacific. It has a membership of more than 23 million workers from 58 affiliates in 34 Countries in the region.
Mr Anthony was elected by secret ballot at the UTUC regional conference held in Kochi, India this week.
“Personally, I feel humbled that the workers of this region have placed their confidence in me.
“I recognise the responsibility that goes with this election, and I am very mindful of the huge expectations that workers in the region have.”
