THERE is a lot more to be refined in the performance of amateur boxers, says national head coach Cam Todd.
Todd shared these sentiments during the final day of the International Tri-Nations amateur boxing competition at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
He said local coaches needed to see how their overseas competitors were performing in the ring and upon doing so, help their boxers master basic techniques.
“I need local coaches to see that. The experienced boys from Australia, they do the basics well and that’s crucial to get better,” Todd explained.
“It’s good and very well being strong and powerful, but you need basic technique as a foundation.
“So now they’re starting to see the difference, so that’s my takeaway and I hope the coaches see that.”
While the boxers who represented Fiji came from various clubs, he also highlighted how being in a competition at a high level as such fared for them.
He shared how for some of them competing at a high level as the meet may have been like ‘going into unknown waters’.
“Some of them have stood up really well, some of them probably need a bit more work, but this is what we need to get better.
“This is the way to sharpen ourselves.”
When this newspaper spoke to him yesterday, competition had progressed towards the halfway mark as evening drew nearer.
He shared how the national team had performed on Friday, the first day of action.
“I don’t know the exact number but we were probably slightly behind Australia, but we had some good wins, and we had some good wins over Samoa today (yesterday); we’re doing much better at the moment,” he recalled at the time.
The final day of competition began at 2pm and continued into the evening.
