THERE’S no other sensation like losing yourself in the service of others.

Thomas Osbourne has been awarded Nalawa branch volunteer of the year in Ra.

He discovered his calling in the village of Mau, amid the Veivatuloa hills of Namosi.

Despite being from Mau, he has maternal links to Waiqanake in Veisari, Lami.

At just 23 years old, Thomas has become someone, people can turn to in his community — dedicating his time as a volunteer at the Nalawa branch of the Fiji Red Cross Society for the past 11 months.

His journey to volunteering began with a simple belief. He gave his time, skills and energy to help others without expecting anything in return.

It’s a value deeply ingrained in his upbringing, one that resonates with the Red Cross’s mission.

“Helping people in need and serving my community— it’s what drives me,” Thomas said.

“There’s something powerful about being there for others, especially during their toughest moments.”

Thomas attended Vashist Muni College where he took keen interest in Home Economics and computer sciences

It was this interest that fuelled his passion to become a teacher.

Teaching, he explains, is another way of serving, one where he could nurture young minds and empower them with knowledge.

His love for science stemmed from his school days, where he marvelled at the intricacies of the natural world.

But life often surprises us, and Thomas’s path veered toward volunteering when he learned about the Red Cross’s work.

“I wanted to be part of something bigger.

“The ideas and values of the Red Cross really inspired me — helping others in times of need, being prepared, and creating positive change in the community.”

For Thomas, the past 11 months have been a whirlwind of learning, growth and service.

He has participated in disaster preparedness training, first-aid workshops, and community outreach programs.

Each experience, he says, has deepened his understanding of what it means to serve selflessly.

Looking to the future, Thomas sees himself continuing his work with the Red Cross while also pursuing his dream of teaching.

He believes the two paths complement each other.

When asked what advice he would give to others considering volunteering.

“Just start, even the smallest effort can mean the world to someone else.

“And you’ll gain so much in return, knowledge, friendships, and a sense of purpose.”
