All Fijians in Canada

All Fijians in Canada

Thank you Allen Lockington, your letter titled “Unique situation” (ST 29/11), it made me laugh.

Out here, one thing I am finding unique is the removal of the racial barrier between the iTaukei man and the Fijian woman of Indian descent.

Back in Fiji, it is common to see our iTaukei women dating and marrying Fijians of Indian origin.

Out here in BC, I have met three iTaukei men married to Fiji-Indian women and I find the Indo-Fijian women living here to be very friendly and open minded.

A young single iTaukei man from Ra, who was part of our group, is now hooked up with a Canadian Indo-Fijian woman and I smile all the time I meet them, trying to figure it out.

In Fiji, some Fijians are still trying to work out why we all have a common name, but out here, when we meet with the Canadian Indo-Fijians, we will come to realise from their friendliness, care and hospitality that we are Fijians, irrespective of our differences.
