Drug arrests in the Northern Division last week have raised concerns from police about the number of people continuing to be involved in the cultivation of marijuana.

The concerns came in the wake of three farmers arrested in the Northern Division after police drug raids in the Cakaudrove area.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said a joint raid conducted by officers from Tukavesi Police Station and the Police Special Response Unit resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old farmer.

Ms Naisoro said this followed the discovery of a farm at the Navonu Hills where more than 700 plants believed to be marijuana was seized.

“The second raid, conducted by the same joint team at a farm in Lomalagi, Dakuniba Village, resulted in the arrest of a 47-year-old farmer from Loa Village,” she said.

“Close to 100 plants, believed to be marijuana, was discovered in the area.

“In the third report, a 30-year-old farmer from Nadavaci Village was arrested at the Bagasau checkpoint in Tukavesi, following the discovery of loose dried leaves wrapped in old newspapers believed to be marijuana. The dried leaves were found in the possession of the farmer.”

She said police were continuing investigations into the three cases.
