The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved approximately $178.4 million (US$80 million) in sovereign-backed financing to help Fiji strengthen its economy, improve disaster preparedness and accelerate private-sector reforms.

The funding is being provided under AIIB’s Energy, Food Security and Economic Resilience Facility and forms part of a broader $512.8 million (US$230 million) budget support package being co-financed with the World Bank.

The programme is designed to strengthen Fiji’s resilience to economic shocks and climate-related disasters while creating a more supportive environment for private sector investment.

By 2028, the reforms are expected to expand disaster risk reduction planning, improve public financial management for disaster preparedness, increase access to regulated financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises, streamline regulations for low-risk tourism businesses, expand digital payments and improve nutrition and physical activity outcomes for children.

AIIB Chief Investment Officer Kim-See Lim said the financing comes at an important time for Fiji.

“AIIB’s financing provides timely support for Fiji’s reform agenda while helping strengthen the systems that underpin long-term economic resilience,” Ms Lim said.

“We remain committed to helping our members strengthen resilience, advance sustainable development and respond effectively to evolving global challenges.”

Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development Esrom Immanuel welcomed the financing, describing it as a significant boost to Fiji’s reform programme.

“We sincerely thank the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for its continued confidence in Fiji and for this significant financing, which comes at an important time as we advance key reforms to strengthen our economy and build resilience against future shocks,” he said.

Mr Immanuel said the funding supports the Government’s commitment to responsible fiscal management and sustainable economic development.

“This support complements our commitment to prudent fiscal management, climate resilience and creating a more enabling environment for businesses and investment.”

“Together with our development partners, we are laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable future for all Fijians,” he added.

The programme aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, with AIIB reaffirming its commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure investment and climate-focused development initiatives in Fiji.
