It will be an agriculture show with a difference this year as the Agriculture Ministry has combined the event with World Food Day because of the unavailability of a venue.

The objective of the event, which starts today, is to raise awareness, says Dr Tekini Nakidakida, the acting deputy secretary for the Agriculture Ministry.

“So instead of doing an agriculture show and World Food Day, we have combined the two events that’s going to run from October 25 to October 27,” said Dr Nakidakida.

He said World Food Day was on October 16, however, the proposed venue was unavailable which led to the event being held with the National Agriculture Show.

“The main objective is to create awareness around the importance of agriculture, the importance of food, the importance of food to the people of Fiji.

“We understood that during COVID-19 when everything was shut down, people still needed to eat three times a day. That’s how agriculture grew by 12 per cent during COVID when all the other sectors stood still.

“Food is a daily necessity for human survival and also at home, we have a lot of potentials where we can increase socio-economic development for Fiji. I think that’s where the Government is looking to improve agriculture development or enhance agriculture development for socio-economic benefits.
