IMPROVEMENTS in evacuation centres can be made.

Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu made the comment after he was asked why most evacuation centres recently opened were difficult to access for people with mobility challenges.

Disability groups have in the past called for more accessible public buildings, especially in rural and maritime areas where evacuation centres are important havens during cyclones, floods, and other disasters.

Mr Bulitavu said evacuation centres were usually built through partnerships. However, he said future designs of evacuation centres would consider the needs of all users.

“We will take into consideration the views of people regarding disability-friendly facilities,” he said.

“Especially walkways, steps and other accessibility needs.”

He said the Government was listening to feedback and would consider these issues in future construction and upgrades.

Mr Bulitavu said the Government would continue working with communities to improve disaster preparedness and ensure evacuation centres are safe and accessible for everyone.
