The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has launched an investigation into an alleged assault at the Lautoka Remand Centre, saying any abuse of authority by officers will not be tolerated.
The investigation follows the circulation of a video on social media showing an incident involving a prison officer and an inmate.
In a statement issued today, FCS confirmed it was aware of the incident and had commissioned an investigation to establish the facts surrounding the alleged assault and determine the appropriate course of action.
“The Fiji Corrections Service also confirms that assault by an officer against a prisoner or vice versa is not tolerated and anyone found to abuse his or her authority will face the full brunt of the law,” FCS said.
The Service said the investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and any further action required.
FCS assured members of the public that a comprehensive update would be provided once the investigation had been concluded.
