Fellow Fijians, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ in very humble circumstances on the Christian calendar.
Jesus Christ then grew up to lead and do many great deeds.
Greatest of which is that his teachings still guide large swathes of our world even in these times of great technological advances, personal disconnection and disaffection.
I believe that his greatest teaching was for us to love thy neighbour. He did not say that we only love some neighbours and not the others. To the contrary, and so I urge all Fijians of all faiths to love thy neighbour and to care that the great majority in our country dwell in great hardship every day.
Made worse by Tropical Cyclone Winston and the recent tropical depression, it is only through that love and care that we will find it in us to support governance that is proper and fit to serve all of Fiji.
