VODAFONE Red Reef Racers turned an unexpected campaign into a memorable run at the 2026 Simple Green Business House Regatta, with teamwork, commitment, and steady improvement guiding the crew into the cup final, where they finished sixth in the overall.

The side was among 35 corporate teams that competed at the Suva Foreshore last Saturday, with crews testing their strength, endurance, and coordination in the V6 outrigger canoe races.

Paddler Malvin Simmons said the team entered the competition with a relaxed mindset but grew in confidence as the races progressed, with unity becoming their biggest strength.

“Vodafone Red Reef Racers entered the tournament with just a laid-back attitude. We weren’t really in it to win it, but I think as we progressed, the team just came together with that team spirit that we were known for.”

He said the team’s progress was built on commitment from every paddler, with their understanding and chemistry improving throughout the competition.

The crew’s preparation leading into the regatta also played a key role, with training sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday as they worked on improving their technique, timing, and race execution.

Simmons credited the support from USP paddlers, who assisted the team through training sessions at the USP Marine Campus in Laucala Bay.

“They’ve tried to give us as many scenarios as possible, trying to work on our timings and stats. All in all, I think preparations were good, and we couldn’t have prepared any better.”

With some paddlers still developing their skill in the sport, Simmons believes their experience highlights what can be achieved through dedication and teamwork.

“Some have just started paddling. And now we’re in the cup final. Last business we didn’t really do well, we came second in the plate. But now we’re in the final, so there’s always room for improvement.”

The RedReef Racers campaign reflects the growing involvement of business in paddling and how events such as the Business House Regatta continue to provide opportunities for new participants to discover and develop their skills in the sport.
