After decades of living in uncertainty, it was quite encouraging to see 113 families from Cuvu in Nadroga finally get lease offer letters, officially ending their status as an informal settlement.

Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo and Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa delivered the documents, marking what they described as a new era of security and opportunity.

The area, Mr Vosarogo said, had been known as Cuvu Informal Settlement.

“We are not simply handing out documents, we are delivering dignity, security, and a future full of opportunity,” he said.

The lease offers mean families can now access housing and government grants, build permanent homes, start small businesses, and secure a legal legacy for future generations.

The land, Mr Vosarogo said, was not just earth beneath their feet, but their foundation, legacy, and a pathway to prosperity.

Build strong homes, he said. “Educate your children, start something new, and know that this land is not just a gift, it is your responsibility and your legacy.”

The revelation is encouraging as we said.

It means families no longer have reason to be concerned about challenges such as evictions for starters.

It means families have security, and a sense of belonging. They can plan their future better, and watch their children grow up in a safe and secure environment.

This is what it is all about really.

Aside from bread and butter issues, people need a roof over their heads.

They need somewhere they can call home, feel secure and take ownership of.

This is why we appreciate any efforts to provide housing for people who are eligible!

It is heartening to see this major milestone and we feel happy for those who stand to benefit!

At the end of the day, it is about empowering people, giving them the tools and legal footing to thrive.

We say it is also about recognising that we all deserve the dignity of a secure home and the opportunity to create a better life for ourselves and for our loved ones.

Initiatives like this one not only improve living conditions but also foster stronger communities, increased economic activity, and a more inclusive society.

As Cuvu families take their first steps into this new chapter, we join them in celebrating a future that looks quite encouraging, and joyful! What a great moment!
