Attorney-General Siromi Turaga says he has briefed President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on the role of the A-G’s Office in being the principle legal adviser to the Government and the President.
He said he advised the President on the importance of moving forward in compliance with the rule of law.
“He may understand that in 2000, 2006 was when the assaults on the Office of the President, lines were blurred,” Mr Turaga said.
“My intentions are to make sure that he stays firm in this transition period.
“If he’s in doubt of any matter, our office is open 24 hours to assist His Excellency and I’ve made that very, perfectly clear.”
He said the President’s Office must not be taking advice from any law firm, or the Opposition. He said any issues related to the governance of the nation must be dealt with only Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
“We have a Prime Minister and the Prime Minister is none other than the Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, no other persons can be entertained.
“If His Excellency wants to entertain the Opposition, that’s fine.
“But in terms of government affairs, the government that is in control today is the coalition Government and the head of the coalition Government is none other than Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka.”
When asked if he had received reports of the President being advised by those not in government, Mr Turaga said no such reports had been received by him and that he went to State House for a different matter altogether.
