A FOURTH-PLACE finish in the girls’ division at the 2025 Fiji Finals has fuelled the hope for Ratu Sukuna Memorial School to push for a better finish this year.
There’s no secret that the school’s strength lies in the field events with Fiji Finals gold medallist, national representative and all-rounder student Loata Lewageena leading the quest.
She will continue to lead this year as a head girl and a strong medal contender in the javelin and discus throw.
Athletes put themselves to the test yesterday at the HFC Bank Stadium during the school’s inter-house meet, vying to make the cut for the Suva Zone 1.
“We might be sending a squad of about 200 athletes to the zone. We are hosting the zone this year, Suva Zone 1, so we want our athletes to perform.
“We are just banking on our field events athletes. We also have some newfound track athletes, and we are trialling them out, just to see that can also participate in track. Every year we are always concentrating on the field especially as we get medals from those events,” vice-principal Kuini Vitukawalu said.
With that, Vitukawalu hopes both their girls and boys’ teams can push themselves to more podium finish this year.
“For our girls this year, it’s whatever they can achieve. Last year we came fourth and we want to go up a notch, so we are just banking on our girls in that aspect.
“Our boys got some medals too last year, we won two medals and that alone was an achievement given that in previous years we did not win any medals so, we hope they could go a step further,” Vitukawalu added.
Competition aside, the vice-principal said the inter-house provided a space for holistic development.
