Bold step for change

WOMEN of Cautata Village in Tailevu took a bold step last week in organising a day for fundraising to upgrade the village women’s centre.

Cautata women’s group president, Lele Wailevu said this was also the first time for women in the village to come together for a worthy cause.

“Every women, those originally from here and those with maternal links to Cautata were asked to give $50 each for their soli because we aim to raise $13,000 for refurbishment of the women’s centre,” Ms Wailevu said.

She added the funds raised would not be for the women’s centre only but they were also planning to build railings alongside the footpath in the village to assist their elderly.

“The centre is not only used by us but also by our elderly women, men and the youths.

“We have 13 tokatoka (family clans) and we wanted each of the clans to raise $1000 to make up the $13,000 that we’re looking for.”

Ms Wailevu said they hoped work would begin in a fortnight.

The need to change, she said, came up after they saw that there was a need to upgrade the facilities in the centre.
