The man in custody and under investigation for allegedly committing an act of sacrilege is Filipe Vakaloloma, a resident of Lami, multiple sources have confirmed to The Fiji Times.

There has been widespread condemnation of the sacrilege at the temple by members of the public, religious groups and politicians.

Mr Vakaloloma was arrested by Police at the temple yesterday within 10 minutes of committing the alleged crime.

While Police haven’t released the identity of the man, it states the man has been referred to medical authorities for a psychiatric evaluation.

“Upon enquiries made, investigators had gathered information regarding his medical history and a decision was made to refer him for evaluation,” said Fiji Police.

“The Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has directed a thorough investigation to be conducted to ensure justice prevails as attacks on places of worship will not be tolerated.”
