GREAT to be back home, says 23-year-old Alexander Masibaka of the Scotland Rugby team, as they prepare to face the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in a Test match on Saturday.
Masibaka, the team’s number eight player, is thrilled to be back in Fiji and to play in front of his family.
His father hails from Nakanacagi, Dreketi, Macuata in Fiji, while his mother is from Paisley in Scotland.
Born in Australia, Masibaka briefly played for the Western Force before signing with French club Montpellier in 2022.
He feels honoured to have been called up to join the Scotland Rugby team and represent his mother’s heritage.
The young player expresses his gratitude for the warm welcome and the opportunity to spend time with his teammates during the week.
“Preparations have been great throughout the week, had great time spending with teammates,” said Masibaka.
“Never expect one day I would come and play in Fiji, with my family watching so this is a great opportunity for me to play infront of them.”
Reflecting on his rugby journey, Masibaka acknowledges his roots and the influence of his father, who introduced him to the sport at a young age.
“This match means a lot to me, my dad is Fijian and mom Scottish, so it’s like a full cycle moment for me, to be able to play in front of my family.”
Meeting his cousins in Fiji has been a great experience for Masibaka, evoking memories of his childhood in the village.
Masibaka is looking forward to the game and invites fans to come and witness an exciting display of rugby.
The FIIJI Water Flying Fijian will host Scotland at 3pm on Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium, Suva.
