The Lakeba Hospital seawall has brought a great sense of relief to the island community following its completion in the 2024-2025 financial year.

The Ministry of Agriculture paid tribute to its late minister Vatimi Rayalu for his crucial role in the project.

“The seawall now stands as a symbol of resilience for the Lakeba Hospital quarters, which had long been affected by land degradation,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The Government’s intervention through the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways was approximately $250,000, resulting in the construction of a 150-metre boulder revetment seawall.”

Director for Waterways Marau Vuli said, like many islands, Lakeba’s foreshore had been severely impacted by climate change.

“One of the key solutions implemented was the construction of boulder revetments to reclaim eroded land and safeguard vital government infrastructure,” Mr Vuli said.

“This seawall will not only protect government buildings and assets, it will also play a crucial role in preserving the coastline against further degradation.”

The ministry stated it would continue to collaborate with communities nationwide to mitigate the impacts of climate change, protect vital infrastructure, and implement sustainable solutions to safeguard livelihoods and natural resources.
