Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu says the incidence of HIV is widespread and not limited to major cities and towns.

He said the belief that HIV only affected urban areas was a misconception.

“The disease is present throughout Fiji, and it is essential that we all recognise its impact in both urban and rural areas,” he said.

Dr Lalabalavu said the virus continued to affect communities across the nation and he urged the public to treat the issue with greater urgency.

“The virus is not only spread via Bluetoothing, but also through unsafe sexual practices.

“There is a pressing need for a shift in mindset among those who test positive for HIV. Only by changing attitudes and behaviours can we effectively curb the spread of this disease.”

To support the fight against HIV, Dr Lalabalavu said the Government allocated $10million to tackle the rising infection rate.

“This includes efforts to improve access to testing and treatment.

“The Government is also procuring additional HIV testing kits, which will be distributed to hospitals in Savusavu and Taveuni to expand testing coverage.”
