Roko Tevita Ului Mara, who will be installed as Tui Nayau today, will become the sixth chief to hold the title.
Taniela Qarabula Cagilabakomeli, bete ni vanua of the Tui Nayau, said the chiefly title holds deep historical roots.
“The first Tui Nayau was Tui Vanuakula. The second Tui Nayau was Bui Varoro then the third was Roko Rasolo, the fourth Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba, the father of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
“Then the fifth was Ratu Mara and now his son Roko Ului Mara who will be installed tomorrow (today).”
Mr Cagilabakomeli acknowledged that protocols have changed with time.
“My role is to advise the traditional chiefs of Nayau about our traditional protocols and the importance of maintaining and observing it,” he said.
“The traditional installation at Maumi, a site our forefathers used at the mountains, is no longer used and we respect the chief’s request.
“However, we need to be mindful of the importance of upholding our traditional values and culture.
“That is why I will continue to do my part and advise our traditional leaders accordingly.”
