Prominent Pacific Harbour resident, Sakiusa Bolaira has called on the National Fire Authority to reconsider their decision to close the Paciific Harbour Fire Station.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane states the closure is to make way for developments by Damodar Yatulau PTE Limited.
“From the 11th of July 2025, all matters pertaining to the Authority’s operations in the Pacific Harbour area will be handled by the Navua Fire Station,” said Mr Sowane.
The fire station is located on a piece of land owned by Damodar Yatulau PTE Limited.
Mr Bolaira, a former broadcaster and journalist said in a social media post the decision to close the station will directly affect hundreds of lives and properties, including the lives of the traveling public crossing our area.
“Whilst I prepare my formal protest to NFA, Hon. Minister Local Government and Div Damodar FJ many of us just simply don’t understand the depth of risk management,” he said.
“Here we have three resorts, Uprising, Pearl, Nanuku, popular eatery and supermarket, True Mart, businesses, heavily populated communities, picnic spots, with two or three new hotels expected to be built soon, one is currently going through public consultation for the Waikalou Hotel development.”
Mr Bolaira has served as a former President of the Pacific Harbour Volunteers fire fighters brigade and states officers there attend to fire calls, motor vehicle accidents, community evacuation during natural disasters, amongst other community work.
“I have a question for my friend Div Damodar, the Arts Village has a coffee shop and a bakery, I heard there may be other eateries, what if God forbid catches fire, your entire investment is at risk, who you are going to call?”
“Rescind this decision please and build a bigger fire station instead.”
