THE Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) recently hosted two workshops on Evidence-Based Thinking (EBT) delivered by Professor Keith Houghton, a distinguished academic and author renowned for his contributions to innovative learning.
This was Professor Houghton’s second workshop in Fiji, with the first one last year drawing positive feedback from the accounting fraternity.
This year’s workshop, which offered a deep dive into critical decision making, was held at the Holiday Inn in Suva on June 18 and at the Nalagi Hotel in Nadi on June 24.
“Professor Houghton emphasised the importance of evaluating the quality of evidence, noting that not all evidence holds equal value,” FICA said in a statement.
“He highlighted the importance of ensuring that evidence is both understood and practically applicable in decision-making.”
The Suva session was opened by FICA’s Professional Development chair Tarlochan Singh, who encouraged participants to fully engage with the workshop and highlighted the relevance of Professor Houghton’s teachings.
Participants were provided with case studies to deepen their understanding and apply the concepts discussed in real-world scenarios, which encouraged critical thinking and allowed attendees to engage with evidence-based decision-making in a meaningful way.
Overall, the workshop helped participants to know how to use solid evidence to make better decisions.
“They will have learned how to identify and evaluate useful information, avoid common biases, and apply their learning to real-life situations,” FICA stated.
“This will support more informed decision-making and promote a culture of smart, evidence-based thinking in both their personal and professional environments.
“Through initiatives like these, FICA continues to uphold its commitment to fostering continuous learning and professional development, equipping its members with the tools to navigate complex challenges with confidence.”
