Fiji Kulas head coach Angeline Chua says her team wants to inspire the next generation of girls as they step onto home soil for their opening match of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup on Saturday.
Fiji will take on Solomon Islands at 7pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Chua said the squad has worked hard for months and is ready to show fans what they have learned.
“As you all know, there is pressure,” she said.
“The work has been done in the previous months, so this is a bit of a test. We need to enjoy the match and show what we can do to the fans in Fiji.”
Although Fiji reached the final in the last Nations Cup, this is Chua’s first time leading the team in the tournament.
She said the focus now is ongoing one step further and leaving a mark for young players coming through.
“The most important thing here is we want to be the pioneers in Fiji and set a good example for the youth,” she said.
“The aim is really to leave a legacy for the next generation.”
Among the squad is 14-year-old Adi Reva, who was discovered during a FIFA football school program in Ba.
“Adi is a very special player,” Chua said.
“She shows no fear on the pitch.”
Chua said Solomon Islands are skilled at keeping the ball on the ground, but she believes Fiji’s physical style will be an advantage.
She urged fans to come in numbers to support the team.
“We really want to see everyone at the stadium.”
