Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu has warned that rising cases of HIV among the iTaukei community is a serious wake-up call for families and village leaders.

“It’s worrying that more than 90 per cent of those with HIV are from the iTaukei community,” Dr Lalabalavu told the Cakaudrove Provincial Council.

He said more than 2000 people had been identified so far, although the World Health Organization estimates the real number could be closer to 7000 across Fiji.

“No village has been spared. This should really wake us up.”

Dr Lalabalavu told the council that risky behaviour and a lack of information were the main reasons the numbers kept growing.

“That’s why we push for more talks in tikina and church meetings.

“People need to hear the truth about how to protect themselves.”

Dr Lalabalavu said his ministry was working with other agencies to reach people in villages and settlements, and that people must not shy away from the issue.

“We must talk openly about HIV — it’s the only way to stop it from spreading. If we don’t, the numbers will only get worse.”
