A total of eight teams are participating in the Lau Provincial Cricket Tournament, which kicked off yesterday in the picturesque Lau islands.
Known for their expert cricket players, this tournament provides a platform for these talented individuals to showcase their skills.
Cricket Fiji’s CEO, Sitiveni Rokoro, highlighted that the tournament was initially planned with 8 teams – Moce, Ono, Oneata, Lakeba, Vulaga, Namuka 2, Lakeba 2, and Namuka.
“The main objective of this event is to promote the sport of cricket in the Lau Group, a region where the game is deeply rooted and has produced many renowned Fijian representatives,” said Rokoro.
“The tournament aims to foster community spirit and reinforce traditional ties and relationships among the people of Lau.
“The event is set to attract a diverse audience, including the Tui Nayau, government dignitaries, members of the Lau Provincial Council, and the local community.”
He adds to enhance the promotion of the tournament, efforts will be made to unearth hidden cricket talent within the Lau Islands, encourage youth participation, and provide an opportunity for the community to witness competitive matches.
With games scheduled at two venues, Tubou Village ground and Yadra Village ground, the tournament promises to be an exciting spectacle leading up to the finals on Saturday at Tubou.
