A $3.1million proposal to boost eco-tourism sites in Macuata has yet to reach the Cabinet, according to Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica.
He said no proposal had been presented to Cabinet so far, but that he would check with the responsible minister.
Businesswoman Amelia Simmons had said the Macuata Tourism Association submitted a proposal for funding to upgrade popular sites like the floating island and the three sisters.
“There have been some issues with the landowners, they say they’re not getting anything from people visiting the site,” she said.
Ms Simmons said the plan included better infrastructure, educational signs, guided tours and training for landowners and villagers so they could benefit directly from visitors.
“Many tourists from North America and Canada are attracted to these natural spots.”
Mr Kamikamica said there might be funding available through the World Bank to help with the upgrades.
