The Coalition Government has taken a major step toward overhauling Fiji’s education system, with the appointment of the new Education Commission tasked with reviewing the Education Act and setting the direction for a future-ready education sector.

Commission members include Filipe Jitoko, Kelera Taloga, Dr Lavenia Tiko, Professor Vijay Naidu, Dr Priscilla Puamau, Dr Kesaia Seniloli, Arvind Maharaj, and Ana Raivoce.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said the initiative, endorsed by Cabinet, demonstrated the Government’s commitment to delivering a world-class, inclusive, and responsive system.

“The work of this Commission will help guide our education system through an era of transformation, one shaped by rapid technological change, shifting labour markets, and the increasing importance of lifelong and inclusive learning,” Mr Radrodro said.

He said the Commission’s role was to consult widely and “set a bold, clear direction for the next decade and beyond”.

The five key objectives include strengthening teacher quality, school leadership, curriculum and institutional frameworks; promoting unity and belonging; aligning learning with labour market demands; making education more inclusive; and positioning Fiji as a centre of excellence.

“Distance and flexible learning are now essential … early childhood education remains critical … inclusive education must be fully integrated … and as artificial intelligence and digital tools evolve, we must guide their use responsibly.”

Work is expected to be completed by August 2025.
