A powerful show of unity unfolded in Labasa on Monday as students joined forces with police, military, fire and prison officers to mark the International Day for the Prevention of Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Marching through the town with placards and chants, students and members of the disciplined forces sent a clear message about the urgent need to combat the growing threat of drugs in communities across the Northern Division.

Rural and Maritime Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, who officiated at the event, told those gathered that drug abuse continued to devastate families in the North and demanded a collective response.

“We cannot fight this battle alone. It requires everyone’s effort — schools, parents, communities and law enforcement working hand in hand,” he said.

Mr Ditoka urged students to be positive role models and to report any drug activity they witness in their neighbourhoods.

This year’s theme calls for stronger action across all sectors to prevent substance abuse and protect the next generation from its damaging effects.
