‘Prioritise community projects in budget’

Listen to this article:

FIJI Council of Social Services is urging the Government to prioritise community needs in the upcoming National Budget, calling for a shift from political spending to practical, people-centred investments.

FCOSS executive director Vani Catanasiga said the budget should focus on supporting community monitoring of government projects, infrastructure in informal settlements and climate change initiatives.

“There’s already funding going to rural areas, but what’s lacking is the capacity to implement it effectively,” Ms Catanasiga said.

“It’s not about raising salaries, it’s about retraining the civil service to deliver.”

Ms Catanasiga said adherence to the national development plan was key.

“We should stay the course and not be swayed by political mileage,” she added.

She said there should also be a review of the parliamentarians’ salary increases along with the need for new ministries because these carry increased administrative costs.

“That money could go towards welfare programs or better roads for ordinary citizens.”

With the country on a recovery path, Ms Catanasiga believes strong fiscal discipline across all coalition partners is essential.

“We need unity in purpose so Fijians can see real progress.”
