The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officially launched Infantry Week 2025 yesterday with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva, marking Infantry Day and paying tribute to all infantry soldiers who have served the nation.

Led by the Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR), the ceremony commemorated Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, Fiji’s only recipient of the Victoria Cross, who gave his life on June 23, 1944 during combat operations in Bougainville. His sacrifice remains etched in Fijian military history.

“His actions continue to inspire generations of Fijian soldiers as a symbol of bravery, duty, and selflessness.”

Commander of the RFMF, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, senior military officers, members of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association, and members of the diplomatic corps attended the event.

As part of the week-long observance, RFMF personnel, along with defence partners, also carried out a community outreach program at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Infantry Week 2025 will continue with several activities, including an inter-unit mini-skills competition beginning tomorrow.

“Infantry Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the past and the commitment that continues today.”
