Moana Liebregts and Keenan Hughes will lead Fiji’s women’s and men’s 3×3 basketball teams at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau next week.

Both squads are aiming to win gold and qualify for the FIBA under-23 3×3 World Cup in China later this year, as well as the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Head coach Earl Hughes says the teams are well prepared and focused.

“The last week coverage is game management and understanding along with pre- and post-game routines,” Hughes said.

He said the team is now working on the final phase of preparation.

“We are working on game management, routine, and game day execution.”

Hughes said the energy in camp is positive.

“The atmosphere is filled with excitement, positive vibes, and the players are eager to start playing,” he said.

With medals and qualification on the line, the teams are aiming high.

“We have been preparing to win gold in both men and women’s competition, and we hope to play each game to the best of our ability to make that happen,” Hughes said.

“The women’s team consist of three internationally experienced members with one new to the abbreviated format. The men have one international experienced player in US-based captain Keenan Hughes and three other very capable and talented players. One of which is Sydney-based Issac Sewabu.”

Hughes said the players are in good shape and ready.

“We have worked around issues and adapted to achieve a positive preparation.

“The commitment by Basketball Fiji to the preparation has given the teams a strong platform to prepare from.”

He also shared a final word of encouragement for the players.

“The only advice is to stay positive. All the hard preparation and effort will make the game come naturally. Controlling the highs and low through a positive mind set is crucial to competing over the duration of the competition.”

The teams will depart in two days for the Games, which will be held from June 29 to July 9.
