The Sugar Cane Growers Council has welcomed the rehabilitation package of $650 per acre for farmers who lose their cane outside of the crushing season.
The SCGC states many farmers are affected by pre-season cane fires, which have severely impacted their crops and projected income.
“This intervention is both necessary and greatly appreciated, particularly as the Council has been receiving numerous requests from growers facing such unfortunate circumstances,” said the SCGC.
“The act of cane burning whether on or off-season is a criminal offence and is strongly condemned.”
“The introduction of a rehabilitation package of $650 per acre is a much-needed relief for affected growers.”
“It supports those whose efforts to prepare for the crushing season were destroyed by the cowardly actions of others.”
SCGC adds while the loss of crop has caused significant distress among growers, this relief brings a sense of hope and support for the establishment of a new crop in the coming season.
