More than $18million has been invested in mill upgrades and preventative maintenance across the country, according to Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh.

“The work done at all mills across Fiji, including Labasa, was part of the push to ensure a smoother and more efficient crushing season,” he said.

Mr Singh said the investment made over the past two years was aimed at reducing mill downtime, improving sugar recovery, and ensuring better returns for farmers.

“These improvements are designed to give our farmers a fairer return through better tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar ratios and enhanced mill performance.”

While opening the new crushing season for Labasa, he said, despite some setbacks the mill has performed well for more than a decade.

“The mill has earned its reputation through consistent results, with higher production and improved tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar ratios delivered year after year.”

He said this was achieved through the hard work of farmers and dedicated Fiji Sugar Corporation employees.
