Too many Fijians are falling victim to online threats because they lack basic digital know-how, says the an Online Safety Commission.
Speaking at the inaugural Women in Media (WiM) Conference in Suva this week, commission official Tajeshwari Devi said many users remained unaware of simple tools that could protect their personal data.
“Many people in Fiji are literate in our own ways, we know our work, our professionals and everything, but we are not sometimes digitally literate,” Ms Devi said.
She said this lack of awareness was putting people at risk.
“We go online, but we don’t know how to have some security setups online, simple things,” she said.
“When I go around and just ask ‘how many of you know what is two-factor authentication?’
“Half of you don’t know. Please, go and do your research, because scrolling whole day doesn’t help.
“You have to go on the settings and see how better you can help yourself.”
Ms Devi said many of the complaints the commission received involved compromised or hacked accounts, often preventable with stronger security measures.
