The paramount chief of Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, will lead a series of HIV awareness and education campaigns in villages across the province in the coming weeks.

In an interview, Ratu Suliano confirmed the initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Serua/Namosi HIV Taskforce and the Ministry of Health, with support from the Fiji Police Force.

“Through collaborative efforts by the health team and the Serua/Namosi HIV Taskforce, which I am proud to be a part of, we have not only promoted HIV awareness and safe health practices, but also encouraged blood donation as a life-saving civic responsibility,” Ratu Suliano said.

The Namosi chief, who has served on the taskforce for the past four months, highlighted concerns about the increasing spread of HIV in the region, which he partly attributed to drug use and its influence on the younger population.

“This HIV is very alarming, especially in the Central Division.

“Because of the drugs, I believe the situation has escalated.

“And those who are spreading these drugs are using children. They are poisoning them at an early stage, which will stick with them as they get older,” he said.

He said the campaign would target inland and coastal villages throughout the province, with mobile testing and awareness programs planned.

Community elders have already been briefed, and outreach is set to begin in the next two weeks.

Ratu Suliano outlined his broader vision, stating his commitment to making Namosi a “drug-free province by 2028,” with the aim of eliminate HIV transmission in the region by 2030.

The campaign will be supported by health workers conducting instant HIV tests and delivering education on prevention methods. Police personnel are also expected to assist in outreach activities and drug awareness.

“This is about protecting our people, especially our youth and ensuring a healthier, safer future for our province.”
