Tavu Sorovakatini will take the field at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau not just as one of Fiji baseball’s most experienced players, but as a proud father playing alongside his two sons.
The veteran first baseman and catcher say this will likely be his last tournament, and he hopes to finish on a high.
“It’s probably my last time wearing the Fiji jersey,” Sorovakatini said.
“My motivation is to win this one, not just for the team, but for myself. I want to leave it all on the field.”
The Mini Games will be held in Palau from June 27 to July 9.
This will be the second time Sorovakatini plays at the Pacific Games with his sons.
Their first was in Saipan in 2022.
“I’ve been playing baseball since they were young. I brought them into the game, from throwing and catching to hitting and learning the basics,” he said.
“It’s an honour to play with them now, representing Fiji together.”
Sorovakatini is one of Fiji Baseball’s pioneers. He first represented the country at the South Pacific Games in Suva in 2003, then again in Samoa in 2007 and New Caledonia in 2011.
He also attended the Australian Baseball Academy in 2002, where he says his love for the game deepened.
