Media organisations in Fiji need to expand areas of coverage such as economic empowerment, reproductive health and other women issues.
These were the comments of Selai Korovusere, as she addressed participants at the Women in Media Inaugural Conference 2025 at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, this morning.
Ms Korovusere, the National Consultant – Senior Violence Against Women and Girls Prevention Coordinator with the UN Women Fiji Multi-Country Office said ‘behind the scene’ stories of women should also be told.
“These issues are not covered enough in the media and not told,” she said.
“Annually, we have national expos but before these women come, they do a lot of work preparing for thiese events and it will be good for the media to capture these stories, the challenges they faced in preparing for such events.
“These are issues that should be highlighted. “
Another issue she raised was the lack of investigative reporting.
“It’s not happening now but there was a case in which investigative reporting helped bring out the truth and the matter was resolved.”
Ms Korovusere reminded journalists to also keep in mind, when writing stories, the impacts on families especially children.
“Now that we have social media, do know you also shape the views of your viewers and readers.”
