Former national sevens star Isake Katonibau has issued a passionate call for the Fijian government, Fiji Rugby, and education providers to provide fully funded education opportunities for all past and present national representatives.

In a statement titled “They Gave Everything for Fiji – It’s Time Fiji Gave Something Back,” Katonibau reflects on the sacrifices made by athletes who donned the national jersey, often at the cost of their education, careers, health, and family time.

“Playing for Fiji comes with pride. But it also comes with a price,” he wrote. “We gave up a lot… and we did it without expecting anything back.”

Years later, many athletes find themselves without qualifications or a clear path forward. Katonibau says it’s time the country repays its athletes through education.

“Every person who has represented Fiji, past or present,—should get free access to education. It could be a university degree. It could be a trade. It could be any skill they choose to build their life after rugby,” he said.

He dismissed the idea that athletes should simply be grateful for the opportunity to represent Fiji. “We didn’t beg to play. We earned it.”

Katonibau’s proposal includes three specific calls to action: For Fiji Rugby to publicly support and action the proposal. For the Government to fund education for all national reps. For education providers and sponsors to help make it happen.

“This isn’t about entitlement. It’s about fairness,” he said.

“We did our part. Now it’s time Fiji does theirs. Not with words. With action.”
